Degas, Edgar: GalerieConcentrating on lesser-known works, this site covers Degas' main themes - horses, portraits, landscapes, ballet, theatre and nudes. Including a biography and a life/work chronology, it also has an extensive section of book reviews. Goya, FranciscoThis short, biographical tour through Goya's life and work has a clear narrative and a simple design. The chronology includes his famous paintings, 'The Third of May, 1808', 'Saturn Devouring One of His Children' and 'The Clothed Maja.' Katsushika, Hokusai: 24 Views of Mount FujiThe inspiration for this site was twofold: a sequence of 24 Hokusai Katsushika prints and a novella inspired by them. The site collates all 24 images, and includes some short literary quotations with each one. Liverpool Walker Gallery - The Art of Paul McCartneyA good introduction to the musician's artwork, with discussion about key themes and influences. Manet: Edouard Manet's StudioA deceptively rich site that not only includes 217 paintings - many with commentary and zoom - but also a chronology, large selection of Manet's letters, over 40 mini-biographies of people involved in his life, and details of his death. MatisseBasic biographical details, as well as links to museums that house this artist's work. MichelangeloA beautifully executed site with some high quality images and lots of detailed, scholastic commentary on key periods of Michelangelo's life and work. Undoubtedly a hugely informative resource, the site lacks only a more comprehensive visual collection of his work. Monet, ClaudeThis thematic guide to Monet features 85 key works. Also included are rare photos of the artist, and Monet's full autobiography published in 1900. There's a guide to current exhibitions, and a virtual tour of his house and garden in Giverny. O'Keeffe, GeorgiaAn attractively minimalist design forms the backdrop to this extended narrative biography of Georgia O'Keeffe, illustrated with colour reproductions of her paintings. The site's strength lies in the clarity of its linear form. PicassoStylish website about the artist, featuring a particularly good biography and timeline. Pollock, Jackson: National Gallery of ArtPollock's unique style and approach to painting are intelligently reviewed here. A detailed biography contextualises Pollock, and displays his early paintings with those of his mentors. 'Lavender Mist', a work that epitomises 'Jack the Dripper' is examined in depth. Van Gogh's LettersThis exhibit is a public service of the Institute for Dynamic Educational Advancement (IDEA). This web site is by far the most accurate compilation available, and is periodically updated. The letters' authors are all noted; most are written by Vincent van Gogh and Theo van Gogh. Van Gogh, Vincent: GalleryAn impressive shrine to Van Gogh, based around a vast array of paintings, drawings and watercolours. Highlights include the sketches included in letters to the artist's brother Theo, and a large selection of self-portraits. |
