Fall River Adult Basic Education Program
The Fall River Adult Basic Education Program is funded by a grant from the Massachusetts Department of Education. The Program is for adults 16 or older who have not received a high school diploma or who seek to earn a GED in order to strengthen their academic skills for employment, education, or future training.
This program is free. Academic instruction is primarily classroom-based and allows students to advance at their own learning rate. There are several levels of classes both day and evening. These classes will advance you through the skills necessary to receive a GED diploma and continue on to college coursework if desired. All classes address the five GED subject areas of reading, mathematics, writing, social studies and science. Classroom experiences provide a positive learning environment with competent, supportive instructors. Instructional approaches include group instruction as well as individualized, project-based and computer-aided instruction. Academic counseling and assessment services are provided to students to help determine the curriculum to best meet their individual needs.
Program Supports
Students may access a range of academic support services. These services are education and career counseling, one-on-one tutoring, individual or group tutoring in the resource room, and guidance if you should want to continue with college through our transition services.
In addition to participating in academic activities, students have the opportunity to be involved in the program through the Health Team and the ABE Advisory Council.
Students should speak with Helen Gedraitis (x2373), our educational counselor, about individual goals and needs as well as availability of classes.
Applicants must take a Placement Test in reading and math. The results of this testing will place the learner in a class that will meet his or her individual needs. Before beginning classes, students will receive a full-program orientation. Once in class, books and materials are provided free. Students must maintain good attendance, set goals, and work toward achieving their goals to continue in the program.
