Adult Basic Education

Adult Basic Education (ABE) is an education program that assists individuals 16 years of age and older, who do not possess a high school diploma or General Educational Development (GED), who lack the skills associated with a high school education, or who lack the ability to speak, read or write in English.

Adult educators and staff assist adults to acquire the skills they need to accomplish their individual goals. Adult learners may set goals to learn to read, get a job, help their children in school, participate in society, earn a GED, or enter college or job training programs.

Bristol Community College’s Center for Adult Basic Education and Workplace Literacy offers a range of service options in the Fall River, Taunton and Attleboro areas. Program and course offerings include:

• Free comprehensive ABE programs that provide academic preparation, educational counseling, one-on-one tutoring, and support for continuing on to next steps
• Fee-based ESOL and GED Preparation courses
• Workplace classes
• Official GED testing
• Professional development support for ABE staff

Funding for ABE services comes from diverse sources, including public grants, contracts, tuition and fees, and private contributions.
