Volunteer to become a tutor

The Adult Basic Education program here at Bristol Community College, funded by a grant from the Massachusetts Department of Education, is dedicated to providing every adult with the opportunity to develop basic literacy skills. Our volunteer tutoring program is intended to help students in their pursuit of these skills and is currently seeking enthusiastic people to serve as volunteer tutors.

You can use your talent and skills to help students:

  • gain additional help in subject areas needed by students working toward achieving their General Education Diploma (GED).
  • profit from additional experiences and insights
  • acquire self-confidence
  • feel good about themselves

By putting your knowledge and experiences to good use, you will be playing an important role in the lives of others. You will not only make a difference and be a positive influence but also probably have just plain fun!

Share the gift of literacy by becoming a tutor:

  • No prior teaching experience is necessary.
  • A tutor must be at least 18 years old and have a minimum of a high school diploma or GED.
  • An initial 15-hour tutor-training session will be required
  • The instruction will be individualized usually weekly for 1 to 2 hours; the amount of time you devote will depend on you and your schedule.

We ask tutors to commit to at least six months; often it will take students that long to meaningfully progress in their studies.Call for the latest dates and times.
