Third Annual Cake Show and Competition at BCC

Bristol Community College invites professional and amateur cake decorators to enter its third annual SkillsUSA Cake Show Fundraiser on Saturday, April 10, 2010. The show is foremost a competition, but is also open to guests who want to experience local talent competing in four levels of cake decorating expertise:
Novice- a decorator whose business is part-time and home-run and who has not won any decorating competitions
Professional- a decorator whose job is making and decorating cakes for bakeries and private businesses, or who has competed in professional competitions
Postsecondary-a decorator in any college baking or pastry arts program
High school- a division open to all high school age cake decorators
Novice, professional, and postsecondary competitors can enter two artistic categories: Costume or Dress Designs from Classical Movies or Movie Stars and Open Wedding Design. The Costume or Dress theme will feature decorated cakes enhanced with sugar, gum paste, fondant, and other forms of sugar media to create a motif that hearkens to classical movies and their timeless wardrobe designs, but does not have to resemble a dress. The Open Wedding Design theme will give the artists the opportunity to craft a wedding cake in a creative, romantic design that displays decorating techniques to potential clients.
High school students can enter their own competition, which is themed Holiday Fun for this year’s show. Much like decorators in the Costume or Dress category, contestants will use sugar, fondant, and other media to create a holiday-themed cake.
All cakes in all categories will be judged on professionalism, what kind and how many techniques were applied, cleanliness of cake and fondant work, and the execution of the theme design.
The registration fee for competitors is $10, which allows the decorator entrance to the competition. For the high school category, students pay an additional $5, as the $10 fee covers the instructor’s entrance and free demonstrations. All registration fees must be paid by April 1, 2010. The full schedule will be posted by February 15, 2010.
The BCC Cake Show Fundraiser is sponsored by SkillsUSA, a national nonprofit organization that serves teachers and high school and college students who are preparing for careers in trade, technical, and skilled service occupations. It will take place in the Commonwealth College Center at Bristol Community College and will be open to the public for a $10 admission.
