Message From BCC President on DACA
Dear BCC Community,
On Sept. 5, 2017, the United States Department of Homeland Security initiated the orderly phase out of the program known as Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA). To our DACA students, please know that we care for you and will do our very best to advocate for you and help you attain your American Dream.
I would like to share with you the joint statement I have signed on behalf of Bristol Community College in support of DACA, with The Massachusetts Community Colleges and Boston Public Schools. The college stands together with these institutions to advocate for the protection of all people eligible for DACA.
In response, I would also like to reiterate to the entire college community that, regardless of immigration status, Bristol Community College is your college. As your college, it is our responsibility to support the educational aspirations of all people in our community, and to continue to root our mission in diversity and inclusion.
As of yesterday, the Trump administration will not consider new applications for legal status. However, DACA students with permits set to expire by March 5, 2018 may apply for renewal before October 5, 2017. While there is time for Congress to act on legislation regarding DACA recipients, the college is currently working on offering informational sessions to help DACA students better understand what is happening and become familiar with their legal rights. We will keep the college community informed with details about these events, as well as other ways we can best inform, serve and keep every student safe that is affected by this action.
Please know that BCC’s Counseling Services are available to assist students. Services are free, confidential and provided in a friendly, supportive environment. You may contact BCC Counseling Services by calling 774.357.2234.
Here in Massachusetts we have an estimated 23,000 DACA eligible population. I certainly hope that Congress will find a way to allow our Dreamers the opportunity to continue their studies, fulfill their careers, and live their dreams in our community. Let’s work together to support our Dreamers and keep them safe.
