The Crucible opens at BCC
Bristol Community College’s resident theater company, BCC THEATRE REP, continues its 22nd season with The Crucible by Arthur Miller. Performances will be held at 8 p.m. on Thursday through Saturday, November 20-22.
“This was a play that the students wanted to do,” said theatre director Rylan Brenner. “Coming off We the People, the students were excited about the idea of responding to world situations through the theatre. It was an empowering experience for them.”
This is the first time that Brenner will direct the classic play. BCC THEATRE REP performed We the People: a Convention of Ordinary Lives in October. The night of scenes was compiled to speak to the relationship of ordianry people and the government. Brenner said that the lessons The Crucible holds on the dangers of rumors and intolerance are particularly relevant after this election.
“The Crucible speaks to how a sense of fundamentalism can be restraining,” said Brenner. “In a sense they created their own monster by repressing the people.”
The Crucible will take place in the Jackson Arts Center at the Fall River Campus on 777 Elsbree Street. Tickets are $14 for general admission, $6 for students and seniors. For more information, please call BCC THEATRE REP at 508.678.2811, ext. 2442.
Rodgers Cyber Café opens in Farley LRC

A crowd of students, faculty, staff and community members gathered at Bristol Community College on Friday morning for the grand opening of the Rodgers Cyber Café.
Embedded on the first floor of the Eileen T. Farley Learning Resources Center, the Cyber Café was first conceived to address a lack of student areas on the Fall River Campus.
The Cyber Café is encircled by a glass wall, allowing for library work and lounge areas that do not disturb the quiet of the rest of the library. The Rodgers Cyber Café provides wireless access to the Internet for users with their own notebook computers, as well as computers installed in the space. Furnished with comfortable chairs and conversational group areas, the Rodgers Cyber Café also contains vending machines with a variety of food for snacking. A microwave is also available for use.
The Rodgers Foundation has been a long time supporter of Bristol Community College through its Foundation. It was created by Tom and Bill Rodgers, long time business leaders and residents of the area, to support projects that benefit Fall River residents. The Rodgers Cyber Café will first and foremost benefit Bristol students, but as the library is also open to community users it will also allow local residents to enjoy the contemporary space.
BCC students hold Hunger Banquet
On Thursday, November 20, 2008, students, faculty, staff, and community members at Bristol Community College in Fall River will join the nation’s oldest and largest anti-hunger movement to raise awareness on the global food crisis. Oxfam America’s Fast for a World Harvest brings home to Bristol Community College the experience of living with poverty that is shared by millions in the US and overseas. The event is being sponsored by BCC’s Rotaract Club, International Club, MASSPIRG, and Catholic Student Association.
This year BCC hopes 100 students, faculty, staff, and community members will participate in the Oxfam America Hunger Banquet event. The event will be held on Thursday, November 20, 2008 from 5 to 7:30 p.m. in Commonwealth Center (Building G) at BCC, located at 777 Elsbree Street, Fall River, MA 02720. Participants will get a chance to experience a meal as a low income, middle income or upper income global citizen. The event will feature three guest speakers who are working to address hunger, poverty, and health issues locally and internationally. They are: Ryan Lee with Project Bread, Dr. Fran Jeffries of Wheaton College (Operation Upgrade in South Africa), and Dr. Kevin Curry or Bridgewater State College (Clean Drinking Water Initiative in Cambodia). This event is one of the thousands of events taking place across the country. Tens of thousands of people take part in Oxfam America’s Fast for a World Harvest campaign every year at their churches, schools, colleges and community groups.
Tickets for the event will be sold at the door. The cost to participate is $3 dollars for students and $5 dollars for all others. Money raised from the event will be donated to Oxfam America, an international relief and development organization that creates lasting solutions to poverty, hunger, and injustice. Oxfam International states that “at any given moment, there are 854 million people in the world suffering from hunger, and every day 30,000 children under the age of five die of preventable causes including malnutrition.” By participating in Oxfam America’s Fast campaign, the BCC community is doing its part to try and change the reality faced by poor people across the world.
