Appointments are available for your convenience at each of our campuses. Drop in tutoring is available:
- Fall River: Tuesday & Wednesday 10 a.m. - 7 p.m.; Friday 10 a.m. - 3 p.m.
- New Bedford: Wednesday & Thursday Noon - 3 p.m.
- Taunton: Monday 2 – 5 p.m.
It is possible that students may be able to acquire a same day appointment on the other days in Fall River and on the other campuses. However, we cannot guarantee that.
- In order to better serve you, sessions will be limited to 45 minutes, starting on the hour.
- Once you enter the Center, a tutor will sit down to work with you, one-on-one.
- Your tutor will ask if you have your professor’s instructions and what you think the professor expects.
- Because we feel that sessions need to be interactive and that you, as the writer, need to be involved from the start, tutors will ask lots of questions and will always listen.
- From the start, tutors will ask what YOU want out of the session and will do their best to accommodate you.
- If comfortable for you, tutors are likely to ask you to read your writing aloud before discussing it. We encourage re-reading to spot errors; reading your work aloud is likely to highlight some of those mistakes.
- Tutors will initially focus on "big picture" concerns such as making certain that you've answered your teacher's question, or that you've organized your writing effectively.
- Grammar and mechanics matter, too. Tutors will assist in identifying any errors in your writing, but keep in mind that the tutor will not edit your paper for you. You will instead be guided in your own editing.
- Tutors will help you to design a revision plan; you will leave the Writing Center with a written plan in hand, so that you know exactly what your next steps will be for finishing your document.
- Tutors are also happy to work with you on non-academic writing. So, if you have a scholarship essay, a resume, an article that you are writing for the school newspaper, or a short story, we are happy to serve as your test audience.
What to Bring to the Session
- A copy of your professor’s instructions
- Any writing that you've done so far
- Any comments from your professor about the paper
- A willingness to spend time to improve your work
Student Rights & Responsibilities
- Students should come to the Writing Center prepared to be active participants during the tutoring session.
- Students should expect to maintain "ownership" of their writing; the writing must remain their own.
- Students should begin work in the Center with an open mind, prepared to work on problems that they have not anticipated.
- Students should allow as much time as is needed to work on their writing.
- Students should start working on an assignment early enough to allow time for writing, discussion, and revision (if needed).
- Students should bring to tutoring sessions all materials that will aid tutors, including any instructions and comments from teachers.
- Students should treat tutors and other students working in the Writing Center with the same level of respect that they themselves would expect to be given.
- Students should always be treated with courtesy and respect, regardless of abilities or background.
- Students have the last word on whether any changes are to be made in their work
