This fall 2005 roster of colloquia represents the final such offerings of this grant. While we hope to raise more money for professional development for secondary-level teachers of American history, future programs will look quite different. We therefore hope you take advantage of this final opportunity for the TEACHING AMERICAN HISTORY Professional Development Project activities with which you have become familiar.
As in the past, each of the colloquia relates directly to the Massachusetts History and Social Sciences Curriculum Framework adopted by the state Department of Education in August 2003 and includes practical help for preparing your students to become better citizens and achieve better scores on the MCAS. These colloquia provide opportunities to discuss new scholarship in US history and to think through constructive approaches to integrate such scholarship into your classroom practice.
Because of the success of some our new-format colloquia, this year we will sponsor monthly field trips for teachers and a monthly history-movie club. Instead of offering a stipend to field-trip participants, we will reimburse your school or district for your substitute and provide transportation, lunch and reading materials. For the movie-club, participants will need to attend a certain number of sessions in order to earn stipends and Professional Development Points. Please read the colloquia descriptions carefully to be sure you understand how they work.
You can register by any of four methods:
Preference is given to teachers of history in grades 5-12 on a first-come basis.
Each qualified participant in most of the colloquia will receive a stipend of $150 and at least 10 Professional Development Points. Receiving the stipend and/or PDPs depends on the satisfactory completion of a lesson plan based on the material explored in the colloquium for which it is submitted.
