Each year, the Teaching American History Project: Making American History Tangible will hold a Summer Institute covering a different era in the history of the United States. In the summer of 2004, we ran a day institute out of Bristol Community College focusing on 19th century developments, with trips to such local resources as Sturbridge Village, Slater Mill, the New Bedford Whaling Museum and Lowell. We also ran a residential program based in Lowell that brought recent scholarship and visits to sites important to the Industrial Revolution into classroom teachings. In 2005, we will likely hold another residential institute, this time in Washington, D.C. the cradle of our democracy.

Because of limited space, inclusion in all summer institutes is competitive. Application forms will become available several months in advance of each institute. Participants can choose between receiving Professional Development Points and a stipend or, with additional graduate-level work, graduate credit. The Teaching American History Project: Making American History Tangible covers all costs of participation in our institutes.
