Future History > Essentials
Every semester for the next three years (2006-2008), the Teaching American History Professional Development Project will sponsor a series of events that will deepen your understanding of the place of primary sources in history and the value they can bring to the American history classroom. Each semester, three renowned scholars will offer a public lecture in their historical specialty under the theme “Immigration and the American Identity.” For special program participants, these scholars will offer an intimate workshop demonstrating how primary sources led them to the conclusions made during their lecture.
In addition, participants will go on one field trip each semester in search of material-culture primary sources After both the field trips and the workshops, program participants will work together with experienced educators to devise strategies for bringing these primary sources into the classroom.

Teachers sign up on a semester-by-semester basis. Any teacher completing any two semesters will be eligible, upon the completion of an annotated bibliography, for three graduate-level credits in history, offered in partnership with the University of Massachusetts at Dartmouth..
In addition to the graduate credit, for which the grant pays, teachers will receive a stipend of up to $500 per semester. We also sponsor activities to build networks of cooperation with novice teachers from other districts. The grant also reimburses your district for a substitute for you any time you join us for a professional development activity. As an active partner in the Southeastern Massachusetts Teaching American History Consortium, your district fully supports your participation in this project. The grant office will work with your school and district to ensure your ease in participation.
