What is drawing? Drawing is both a verb and a noun and defines both the act of mark making and the finished product. It can be broken down into various components such as gesture, line, contour, space, shape, plane, value, and texture. The impulse to make marks and assign meaning to them is the basis for written language. This same impulse is also the basis for making and understanding drawings. In its broadest definition drawing is a language through which we communicate ideas.
As a device to talk about ideas, drawing seems to be as old as human life itself. It is an efficient way to communicate – a picture worth a thousand words – all you need is a surface and a scribing tool.
The straightforward aspect of this is important – but it belies the magic inherent in the process – we are instantaneously able to perceive drawing as marks on paper and read those marks as forms in space. Ten artists are represented in this exhibition and they use drawing to record objects, investigate and study the visible tangible world, and transcribe thoughts and impressions. Each one's connection to the process is uniquely personal.

Linda Bond
Linda Bond received an MFA in painting from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst and a BFA from Bradley University, Peoria, Illinois. She is an Assistant Professor at Massachusetts College of Arts, Boston. Recent solo exhibitions include The Drawing Project Presents Linda Bond, Bernard Toale Gallery, Boston. Selected group exhibitions include A Nation Mourns & Artists Respond, Fitchburg Art Museum, Fitchburg, MA. She has received multiple grants from the Massachusetts Cultural Council, Arlington Arts Council. She lives in Weston, MA.
Yizhak Elyashiv
Yizhak Elyashiv was educated at RISD and Bezalel Academy of Art and Design, Jerusalem, Israel. Currently he teaches in the foundation program at RISD and Rhode Island College. Recent exhibitions include shows at Montserrat College, Beverly, MA and group exhibitions at Newport Art Museum, Rutgers University, and at the University of Minnesota. He makes his home in Providence, RI.
Lloyd Martin
Lloyd Martin has most recently exhibited works at Steven Haller Gallery, New York; The Brattleboro Museum, Brattleboro, VT; Lenore Gray Gallery, Providence, RI; and Trustman Gallery, Boston, MA. He is the recipient of the 2000 Drawing Fellowship Award from the Rhode Island State Council on the Arts. He attended Rhode Island School of Design and graduated in 1980. He lives in Providence, RI.
Mara Metcalf
Mara Metcalf is an Associate Professor at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts Boston. She holds an MFA from the School of the Museum of Fine Arts and a BFA from Rhode Island School of Design. Recent exhibitions include Five Rhode Island Artists, South County Art Association, Kingston, RI; New Work, Lenore Gray Gallery, Providence, RI; and Synesthesia, Hera Gallery, Wakefield, RI. She resides in Providence, RI.
Katherine Meyer
Katherine Meyer has a BFA from the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, MA. She recently received residency grants from the Eastern Frontier Educational Foundation, Norton, ME and the Millay Colony for the Arts, Austerlitz, New York. Selected exhibitions include Rice/Polak Gallery, Provincetown, MA; Virginia Lynch Gallery, Tiverton, RI; and Conversations in Black and White, Foreman Gallery, Hartwick College, Oneonta, NY. She makes her home in Bristol, RI.
Lisa Russell
Lisa Russell has most recently exhibited at the Warwick Museum of Art, Warwick, RI, Firehouse Gallery, Newburyport, MA, and Powers Art Gallery, Belmont, MA. She holds an MFA from the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston and a BFA from Massachusetts College of Arts, Boston, MA. She resides in Braintree, MA.
Shane Savage-Rumbaugh
Shane Savage-Rumbaugh received an MFA in painting from Cornell University, Ithaca, New York and is currently Assistant Professor at Stonehill College in Easton, Massachusetts. He has recently been awarded residency grants to Rowe Conference Center, Rowe, MA and Watershed Center for the Ceramic Arts in Newcastle, Maine. Recent exhibitions include The Figure Now, Westport Arts Center, Westport, Connecticut; Mute, Anne Arundel College, Arnold, MD. He resides in New Bedford, MA.
Daniel Szmanowski
Daniel Szmanowski lives and works in Boston. He recently graduated with a BFA in Illustration from Massachusetts College of Art, Boston. Recent exhibitions include On the Record, Reel Bar, Boston, MA; The Three, Bakalar Gallery, Boston, MA; and Group Show, MassArt President's Gallery, Boston, MA.
Candace Walters
Candace Walters is Assistant Professor of Painting and Drawing at Stonehill College, Easton, MA. She received an MFA from Boston University for the Arts, Boston and a BFA from Hartford Art School, The University of Hartford, Hartford, CT. Recent exhibitions include Pretty Sweet, DeCordova Museum, Lincoln, MA; Visions and Revisions, Museum of Fine Arts Boston; and Homemade, Brickbottom Gallery, Somerville, MA. She resides in Mansfield, MA.
Ronald Wilczek
Ronald Wilczek's recent exhibitions include Learning to Love Line, A Retrospective, Roger Williams University, Bristol, RI; Ten Artists, Attleboro Museum, Attleboro, MA; and Recent Work, Studio One, New Hope, PA. He recently retired from a long teaching career at Roger Williams University. He holds an MFA from Yale University and a BFA from RISD. He makes his home in Dighton, MA.
