Federal Student Loan Changes
Beginning with the 2026-2027 academic year, federal law requires colleges to reduce the maximum amount of Direct Loans available to students who are enrolled less than full-time.
Loan offers will be available in your myBristol account by August 17, in time for the book advance.
For the latest information about these federal financial aid changes, visit the Federal Student Aid website.
Before you drop a class
Changing your schedule can impact your financial aid. Before dropping or withdrawing from a course, contact the Financial Aid Office so we can explain how your enrollment change may affect:
- Your federal loan eligibility
- Future loan disbursements
- Any balance you may owe to the college
We're here to help you understand your options before making changes to your schedule! Please reach out to the Financial Aid team by email at FinancialAid@BristolCC.edu, phone at 774.357.2515, or by scheduling an appointment through EAB Navigate 360.
Your federal student loan eligibility is now tied to the number of credits you are enrolled in during the academic year.
- Students enrolled full-time may qualify for the full annual federal loan limit.
- Students enrolled less than full-time may qualify for a reduced annual loan amount.
- The fewer credits you take, the lower your maximum annual loan eligibility may be.
| Enrollment Status* | What It Means for Your Federal Direct Loans |
|---|---|
| Full-Time (12+ credits) | May qualify for the full annual federal loan limit, if otherwise eligible. |
| Three-Quarter Time (9–11 credits) | Your maximum annual loan eligibility may be reduced. |
| Half-Time (6–8 credits) | Your maximum annual loan eligibility may be reduced further. |
| Less Than Half-Time (0–5 credits) | You are not eligible to receive Federal Direct Loans. |
*Enrollment levels shown reflect Bristol Community College's standard semester credit-hour definitions.
The Schedule of Reductions applies to students receiving:
- Direct Subsidized Loans
- Direct Unsubsidized Loans
Parent PLUS Loans are not subject to these reductions.
Your enrollment is reviewed before each loan disbursement.
If you are enrolled less than full-time when your loan is scheduled to disburse, your annual loan eligibility may be reduced before the funds are released. While the college may initially estimate your loan based on your expected enrollment, your final eligibility is determined using your actual enrollment at the time your loan is disbursed.
Adding or dropping classes may impact your loans.
- If your enrollment changes before a future loan disbursement, your remaining loan eligibility may be recalculated.
- Future loan disbursements may be reduced or canceled if your enrollment decreases.
- Loan funds you have already received are generally not adjusted, but any remaining disbursements must be based on your enrollment at that time.
The Schedule of Reductions is only one part of determining your federal loan eligibility. Your loan amount may also be affected by:
- Cost of Attendance (COA)
- Other financial aid you receive
- Annual and lifetime federal loan limits
- Half-time enrollment requirements
- Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP)
- Other federal student aid regulations
The U.S. Department of Education implemented these federal regulations to better align annual federal loan eligibility with a student's enrollment level during the academic year. Beginning with the 2026-2027 award year, students enrolled less than full-time are eligible for a reduced annual loan amount based on federal regulations.

About Bristol’s Financial Aid Office
At Bristol our goal is to help make coming to college affordable and convenient.
If you’re like most people the big question is “how can I pay for my education”?
That’s where we come in.
Financial aid comes in a variety of forms such as grants, scholarships, waivers, loans and even student employment opportunities. You’ve probably heard the phrase “Financial Aid is available to those who qualify” and to see if you qualify, you’ll need to complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid FAFSA.
The FAFSA is a simple form to determine your eligibility based on your household income, family size and other information. The good news is that most students qualify for some form of financial aid and our financial aid counselors are here to help you every step of the way. The FAFSA application is the one form you need to apply for federal, state and other aid.
Financial Aid is only available to students admitted to an eligible degree or certificate program. At Bristol all of our associate degree programs are eligible for financial aid and many of our certificate programs are too. Your academic advisor can help you select a program of study that meets your educational and career goals, but you’ll get a good idea of what Bristol has to offer by reviewing our academic catalog.
Please feel free to browse our self-help videos on the FAFSA page for more information about applying for financial aid.
Have your financial circumstances changed since you filed your FAFSA?
Financial Aid appeals are now available at Bristol Community College. Filing an appeal with the financial aid office may help you get more money for the spring semester. Learn more about Financial Aid Appeals.
And, at Bristol our counselors are available Monday through Friday to help, so feel free to call or schedule an appointment to meet with us.
